At the New Internationalist subscriptions management portal, accessible from https://subscribe.newint.org, one of our main priorities is the privacy of our visitors. This Privacy Policy document contains types of information that is collected and recorded by New Internationalist and how we use it.

Log Files

New Internationalist follows a standard procedure of using log files. These files log visitors when they visit websites. All hosting companies do this and a part of hosting services’ analytics. The information collected by log files include internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), date and time stamp, referring/exit pages, and possibly the number of clicks. These are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable. The purpose of the information is for analyzing trends, administering the site, tracking users’ movement on the website, and gathering demographic information.

Cookies and Web Beacons

Like any other website, New Internationalist uses ‘cookies’. These cookies are used to store information including visitors’ preferences, and the pages on the website that the visitor accessed or visited. The information is used to optimize the users’ experience by customizing our web page content based on visitors’ browser type and/or other information.

Cookies are small files or database entries that websites can place on your machine. They can be used to help identify you where we need to, for example to customize your view of our website. We use a cookie called nitrk to record the first page you visit on our site and the page that sent you to our site. This helps us improve our marketing.

We use a cookie called thirdParyOptOut to record if you opt-in or out of allowing us to use third party cookies for analytics and advertising.

We use a cookie called cookieNotifHidden to record when you click to close our cookie notification.

We use a cookie called has_js to record if your browser has javascript enabled. This lets us do fancy effects that make newint.org a more pleasant place to be.

You can opt-out of getting cookies from these services (with the exception of Cloudflare) using the link. Opting out won’t delete any cookies already placed.   • Google Analytics — We use Google  Analytics to help analyse use of our website by collecting anonymous visitor behaviour information.   • Cloudflare  — we use Cloudflare to improve our sites loading times. You can see Cloudflare’s privacy policy at: https://community.cloudflare.com/privacy. You can avoid these cookies being placed on your machine by by using an adblocker like uBlock origin. These cookies are necessary to the functioning of newint.org so it is not possible for us to provide a simple opt out as with the other third party cookies.
  • Stripe – we use Stripe for payment processing. Stripe cookies are necessary for enabling certain payment-processing functions such as fraud prevention. authentication, security and analytics.   • GeoIP Detection – We make use of Maxmind GeoIP2 Country database and tooling to provide us with your geographical information through your IP address using the Maxmind Database. GeoIP is a WordPress plugin. With the help of GeoIP we are able to show you country-specific content. Moreover, we use it for improving our website, analyzing behavior of our customers and providing with the best customized services. Most browsers and devices provide tools to opt out from this feature by default. If explicit authorization has been provided, the User’s location data may be tracked by New Internationalist Publications Ltd. Personal Data processed: geographic position. Thus, we believe it is our legitimate interest to process your data on the basis of Article 6, Paragraph 1, lit. f of the GDPR.
  • Google Fonts (Google Ireland Limited) – Google Fonts is a typeface visualization service provided by Google Ireland Limited that allows subscribe.newint.org to incorporate content of this kind on its pages.   • PayPal (PayPal Inc.) – PayPal is a payment service provided by PayPal Inc., which allows Users to make online payments. Personal Data processed: various types of Data as specified in the privacy policy of the service. The PayPal button and widgets are services allowing interaction with the PayPal platform provided by PayPal Inc. Personal Data processed: Cookies; Usage Data.   • Akismet (Automattic Inc.) – Akismet is a SPAM protection service provided by Automattic Inc. Personal Data processed: various types of Data as specified in the privacy policy of the service. Place of processing: United States – Privacy Policy.
  • Google reCAPTCHA (Google Ireland Limited) – Google reCAPTCHA is a SPAM protection service provided by Google Ireland Limited.   • Forms – We use forms to accept your personal data for safekeeping. We make every effort to only require the minimum amount of data in order to process orders, messages and keep your contact information up-to-date and secure. Our forms accept, process and submit data to our secure database where you make every effort to secure and safeguard your information. Some of our forms also send data to third party services and APIs listed in this document.
  • Mailing List – If you optionally consent to be added to our mailing list, we will submit your name, first name, last name, city, country and email address to be used for our internal marketing purposes in the form of an email newsletter and individual email-based marketing messages such as promotions, offers, surveys, and news. We will never sell-on or trade your information to a third-party without your explicit consent.

You can use your browser’s Do Not Track feature, or use a browser plugin like Privacy Badger or an adblocker like uBlock origin should you wish to block any or all of the third-party cookies we use on newint.org. In some cases this may result in some web services being unavailable or have reduced functionality. We do try to minimise the use of cookies to the absolute minimum.

CCPA Privacy Rights (Do Not Sell My Personal Information)

Another part of our priority is adding protection for children while using the internet. We encourage parents and guardians to observe, participate in, and/or monitor and guide their online activity.

New Internationalist does not knowingly collect any Personal Identifiable Information from children under the age of 13. If you think that your child provided this kind of information on our website, we strongly encourage you to contact us immediately and we will do our best efforts to promptly remove such information from our records.
